The Artist
Artist Statement
There is a stigma that follows the act of destruction: The assumption that the old or current should be lamented. A sense of nostalgia falls upon that which is no more.
But what if the act of destruction no longer would be associated with demise? What if we view destruction instead as rebirth? What happens when the act of destruction becomes creation? The destruction of the image leads to new forms, new shapes, and new entities.
Destruction plays a big roll in the execution of my paintings through the effect of layering and uncovering. Each layer gives rise to the next and reveals parts of the under-painting, creating depth and space. There is not a preconceived notion about what the painting will be before it is begun. Overtime, the painting evolves through a three-way conversation between artist, medium and the painting. The evolution of the painting is a discovery of new space, striving for balance and meaning.
